During the process of learning, I have frequently copied the paintings of artists I admire, in order to learn from them. From Chardin I learned simplicity, from Rembrandt the drama of light and the fearlessness of huge and free amounts of paint, from Sargent I have learned the importance of subtlety, from the impressionists the joy of colour, and from Freud I learned to juxtapose strong warm and cool colours more boldly. These have been my main teachers and influences over the years.
